Full Description

Area of salterns centred at TF 34 03. Salterns are visible as 'platform mounds' from a distance. {1}{2} Salterns cropmarks were observed as part of the national mapping programme. {3} The Lincolnshire Coastal Grazing Marsh project noted cropmarks of a saltern complex on aerial photographs dated to 1999. Parts of this complex were also observed as earthworks on a site visit in 2004. {4}{5} Weak magentic anomalies, interpreted as former palaeochannels, were recorded during a magnetometry survey conducted in 2011, on land at Newton Marsh. The former channels appeared to correlate well with previously identified cropmarks of medieval salterns, and were probably utilised in the salt-making process. {6} Evidence of possible medieval saltmaking activity was recorded in December 2012, during an auger survey and trial trenching on land at Bishopthorpe Farm, Bishopthorpe, Tetney. The evidence was located in the south-eastern corner of the site, where a dumped deposit containing a high quantity of fired clay, charcoal and other burnt material was revealed. On analysis, the fired clay fragments were identified as briquetage, mostly being pieces of hearth structure. Many of the pieces were vitrified, which would indicate a high temperature of firing. While Roman and Iron Age saltmaking sites produce large amounts of briquetage, medieval saltmaking sites do also produce briquetage but in much smaller quantities. Given the location of the site in Tetney a medieval date seems more likely. The investigations also recorded buried land surfaces, glacial till and former palaeochannels across the site. The ready access to saltwater and firm ground in this location would indicate an area that was very conducive to saltmaking activities. {7}{8}
