Full Description
PRN 41050
A ploughed out earthwork site of medieval and post medieval date. Finds include 95 potsherds, 9 bone fragments, brick, abundant tile, cut stone, rubble, burnt stone, quern (lava). Foundations still being ploughed. Former large and possibly wealthy stone building adjacent to church. 16th century pottery, PRN 40194. {1}
A site visit noted a sunken sub-rectangular area. A second site visit noted a further depression, formerly a pond, and a sub-rectangular platform.{2}
Geophysical survey in 2002 centred on TF3413 5708 and TF 34250 57075 recorded features possibly relating to the medieval site. {3}{5}{8}
A site visit in 2002 centred on TF3413 5708 noted earthwork features relating to the medieval site.{4}{5}
Trial trenching in 2002 centred on TF3413 5708 recorded features dating from the twelfth to the mid-sixteenth century, mainly in the form of rubbish pits and boundary ditches. The ditches in the southern part of the site were on differing alignments, while those to the north were all aligned east/west. Ditches in Trench 1 to the south were earlier in date, while those in Trench 4 to the north were of later date. This suggests that ditches were laid out along the road at the southern boundary of the site in the thirteenth to fourteenth century, and later fields were laid out to the north in the fifteenth to sixteenth century. All the rubbish pits were along the eastern fringe of the site and became later in date as they progressed northwards. This suggests expansion of the occupation zone northwards between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. A line of postholes dating to the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries were very large and deep, suggesting the existence of a structure. See also PRN 44564. {6}{7}
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Services in September to November 2010 on land at Hall Lane, Stickney prior to residential development. Area 2, centred on TF 34262 57090, revealed a series of pits, ditch boundaries, a post hole and three features which may be part of a post built structure. Medieval pottery including Toynton ware sherds, Potterhanworth sherds, lead glazed local ware and Nottingham glazed ware and animal bone was found within some of the features. Residual sherds of earlier pottery and post medieval brick was found in some pits. {9}{10}
