Full Description

A thin scatter of flints found during the Bain River Survey. {1} A further detailed fieldwalk and limited test pit found some 238 worked flints and demonstrated that the artefacts extended nearly the full length of the field. Analysis of the flint indicates a probable late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. {2}{3} During test pitting and sieving of an area at Grange Farm in advance of further gravel quarrying, further evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age activity was identified. Around 700 worked flints were recovered from a 10metre square sample area. They were mostly recovered from the sieved topsoil. Others were recovered from the subsoil, very few were found in contexts within features. The early Neolithic flint assemblage consisted mainly of flakes and scrapers. The flakes consisted generally of retouched, trimmed, prepared, serrated and waste flakes. There were also some flint axe flakes. Scrapers and points were also recovered. There was a concentration immediately to the west of a pit, which may indicate a work area. There was a further concentration to the north of another pit. Only a few flints were found in these two pits which suggests that their function was not to contain waster from flint knapping, or that they are earlier than the flint knapping phase. It may also be that the flints had originally been in the pits, but had become incorporated into the sub soil as a result of medieval and later ploughing. The late Neolithic/early Bronze Age period demonstrated a similar pattern in relative quantities of type, but contained no serrated flakes or points, but more dressing chips. They were more evenly distributed in the subsoil, although most of them were in a gap between a ditch and a posthole, which, it is suggested, may be some sort of entrance to an enclosure of which the ditch and post hole form part. A structure was identified to the north-west within the area of distribution, which may date it to the late Neolithic/early Bronze Age. The Bronze Age flint scatter skirts the ditch and post hole, which suggests that the features were still present and in use during this period. The distribution also suggests that the habitation area did not reduce in size. The tools consisted mostly of irregular waste flakes and unretouched, probably reflecting the decline of flint craftsmanship in the Bronze Age. {4}{5} Fieldwalking during phase two of the Grange Farm quarry extension found only six worked flints, three pieces of unworked burnt flint and a hammerstone. It was concluded that the finds were peripheral to the genuine concentration of Neolithic and Bronze Age activity identified during earlier phases of investigation. {6}{7} A further phase of fieldwalking in 2000 recovered again minimal artefacts - five worked flints and two burnt flints. This area, immediately north of phase 2, was likewise considered to be peripheral to prehistoric settlement. {8}{9}
