Full Description
Former GCI radar station named as RAF Langtoft. The site opened in 1941, and closed in 1958. The site is now used as a scrapyard. {1}{2}
RAF Langtoft was established during the Second World War, as a Ground Control Intercept (GCI) radar station. The base was retained at the end of the conflict, being substantially enlarged during the late 1940s, and drastically remodelled during the 1950s, under the 'Rotor' scheme to renew Britain's radar defences. This programme added the heavily protected R6 type of double level, surface control bunker still present on the site, along with new radar plinths and other buildings. The station was relatively short-lived, however, and was closed and placed on a 'care and maintainenance' role in March 1958. The site was sold in the 1960s, and is now in use as a scrap yard.
A number of ancillary sites were built to assist RAF Langtoft in its role, including a detached, wireless radio statio between the villages of Langtoft and Baston (see MLI125809), and a residential camp to the north of Market Deeping, used to house some of the base personnel (see MLI125810). {3}
Defences at the site included a Second World War hexagonal pillbox. This structure was reportedly destroyed c.1972. {4}
