Description

A programme of archaeological recording was conducted of the former RAF Langtoft site, to the south of Langtoft Drain Road, Market Deeping. The military base was established during the Second World War as a Ground Control Intercept (GCI) radar station. The base was retained at the end of the conflict, being substantially enlarged during the late 1940s, and drastically remodelled during the 1950s, under the 'Rotor' scheme to renew Britain's radar defences. This programme added the R6 type, heavily protected two-storey bunker still present on the site, along with new radar plinths and other buildings. The station was relatively short-lived, however, and was closed and placed on a 'care and maintainenance' role in March 1958. The site was sold in the 1960s, and is now in use as a scrap yard. {1}
