Full Description

A residential camp was established in this location in the mid 20th century, as an ancillary site of the RAF Langtoft radar station (see MLI34961). The camp was used to house some of the personnel assigned to the station, and was likely constructed at the same time that RAF Langtoft opened in 1941. Whilst RAF Langtoft closed in 1958, it is thought that the residential camp continued to house RAF personnel until 1973, serving other nearby facilities including RAF Wittering. Historic Ordnance Survey mapping of this area shows the camp buildings to still be extant during the mid 1970s. Newer residential and commercial developments now occupy the site, and the vast majority of the former camp buildings appear to have been demolished. {1}{2} Deposits associated with the occupation and clearing of the former camp were recorded in June 1997, during trial trenching on land to the north-west of Wellington Way. The trenching identified layers of mid 20th century debris and burnt material, and the remains of one of the former north to south aligned camp roads. {3}{4}
