Full Description

PRN 34057 A MAJOR SITE ON A DISTINCT SILTY RIDGE. THE POT IS MAINLY BRONZE AGE AND INCLUDES FUNERARY SHERDS. THERE IS ALSO BURNT STONE, FIRED CLAY (DAUB?) AND ANIMAL BONE. 125 POTSHERDS WEIGHING 0.755KG AND 86 FLINTS WEIGHING 0.7KG.{1}, AREA 0.7H, HTM 4M Evaluation work carried out as part of the Fenland Management Project revealed numerous features. Trench 1 contained assorted pits, gullies and postholes with Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flints and pottery of Neolithic, Early to Middle Bronze Age and Iron Age date. A C-shaped gully was also recorded. Trench 2 contained a series of four intercutting gullies, thought to be from around circular structures; one of these gullies had a 3.2m wide entrance. Beaker pottery and middle Iron Age scored ware were recovered from one of the gullies, although the scored ware may be intrusive. Trench 3 contained several large pits of probable Bronze Age date, one of which contained a sherd of Beaker pottery, a loomweight and an alder stake in the very base. The function of the pits is uncertain, but they may be quarry pits or wells.{2}
