Full Description
PRN 33224
CROPMARKS OF TRIPLE PARALLEL LINEAR DITCHES RUNNING NORTHEAST-SOUTHWEST AND VISIBLE FOR c300M FROM TF1100 0954 TO TF1121 0968 (POSSIBLY A MODERN HEDGE- LINE?) ALSO CROPMARKS OF IRREGULAR SUB-RECTANGULAR FIELD BOUNDARIES POSSIBLY ASSOCIATED WITH AN OVAL ENCLOSURE (PRN 32906). {1}
THE TRIPLE LINEAR DITCH WAS INVESTIGATED DURING AN EVALUATION. THE SHAPE AND DEPTH OF ALL THREE DITCHES WERE ESTABLISHED, AND A FRAGMENT OF POSSIBLY BRONZE AGE POTTERY WAS FOUND IN THE BASE OF THE NORTH DITCH. A NARROW GULLY WAS RECORDED SOUTH OF THE MULTIPLE DITCHES. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEM WAS NOT CLEAR.{2}
During trial trenching in 2002, centred on TF 1121 1003, five ditches of the triple ditch system were excavated, comprising a large central ditch, a ditch along the northern side of the central ditch, and three ditches along the southern side of the central ditch. The central ditch displayed no recuts and was significantly larger than any of the outer ditches, suggesting that it is unlikely that the triple ditch system functioned as a stock enclosure or droveway. It is thought more probable that the triple ditch system related to demarcation of the landscape.{7}
