Description

Trial trenching was carried out prior to a proposed quarry development, in order to determine the extent and nature of the archaeological resource. Sixteen trenches were placed to answer a series of specific questions which had arisen as a result of the desk-based assessment and geophysical survey. Trenches 1, 2 and 4 measured 50m in length, Trenches 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 14 and 15 measured 30m in length, Trench 8 measured 15m by 15m, Trench 10 measured 20m by 20m, Trench 11 measured 16m in length, Trenches 12 and 13 measured 75m in length, and Trench 16 measured 14m in length. Features in Trench 11 were planned but left unexcavated to preserve them from the high water table and heavy rainfall.{1}
