Full Description
Ermine Street was the original main thoroughfare from the south to the Roman centre at Lincoln, but there was a second route, running almost due north from Durobrivae to Bourne and then north-west to rejoin Ermine Street at Ancaster. The road runs for approximately 29.5 miles. Its purpose was possibly to skirt the fens more closely and to make contact with the Car Dyke. {1}
Long sections of the material of the Ancaster to Bourne Roman road show clearly in ploughland. {2}
It could be seen that King Street follows the western wood boundary during a site visit to Callans Lane and Thorney Woods (TF 063 260). Along this boundary, a broad bank is present, with slight traces of King Street. {3}
The line of the Roman Road was identified as a cropmark in Ropsley and Humby parish TF 0022 3696 - SK 9984 3787). {4}
The line of the road from Ancaster to Bourne is clearly marked at TF 0307 3086 by a distinct bank 9ft wide and 1ft 6in high. {5}
The line of the Roman road is clearly visible as a light soilmark, running parallel to the modern road between SK 9854 4114 and SK 9884 4060. The road also runs directly past the Sapperton Villa site. {6}
The line of the Roman road is preserved by parts of Clipsey Gap Lane and Paddock Lane, running from the south of Stainfield to the north-west of Cawthorpe. {7}
