Full Description

King Street, the Roman road between Ancaster and Chesterton (Cambridgeshire) enters the county at TF 1106 0818 in West Deeping and runs in a straight line roughly northwards towards Bourne, crossing the River Glen just to the east of Kate's Bridge and entering Bourne at approximately TF 0975 1965. The road forms an obvious causeway for much of its course south of Bourne, having a large agger 40 feet wide, 6 feet high and with a wide and deep ditch along its western side. The parish boundaries of West Deeping, Tallington, Langtoft, Barholm and Stowe, Baston and Greatford follow the line of the Roman road as far north as Kate's Bridge. The modern A15 leaves the Roman road alignment south of Thurlby to pass Park Wood; and again north of Thurlby at Elsea Wood, whilst the Roman agger can be seen continuing through the wood (where it is 27 feet wide and 2 feet high) and on towards Bourne. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7} Earthworks may survive at TF 1068 3180. {8}
