Full Description

PRN 33974 It seems possible that this is a Roman road connecting the Haceby Sapperton sites with Ancaster. It leaves the Ermine Street at the top of the hill south of Ancaster. There are distinct signs of a bank across this field.{1} During trial trenching at about TF0045 3683, the remains of a sunken roadway were recorded on a north-west/south-east alignment. Limestone inclusions in the fills of this feature indicated later resurfacing. Although no artefacts were recovered, the roadway is on the line of the cropmarks of Long Hollow Roman road and is thought to represent the course of this thoroughfare. The about 6m wide roadway showed no evidence of flanking ditches, although later ploughing may have removed these, as a single ditch appears on aerial photographs of this section of the road.{3}{4}
