Full Description
During a site visit to the woods, a series of banks and ditches were recorded. There are external banks running along the boundaries of Scullar wood, separating it from Pasture Wood. Forming the western limit of Pasture Wood there are more banks and ditches, these also form the parish boundary between Kirkby Underwood and Edenham. {1}
A walkover survey was undertaken in February 2006 by Northamptonshire Archaeology. The survey confirmed the location of the ditch and bank boundary around the woodland and the Roman road of King Street was identified as a woodland track. In Callan's Wood, drainage ditches and broad ditches, possibly evidence of an earlier field system were visible. In Pasture Wood, the survey identified a rectangular bank and ditch enclosure, a further bank and ditch and a network of drainage ditches. In Scullar Wood, a boundary ditch was visible and the moated enclosure [PRN 35167] was identified. In Thorny Wood, a bank and ditch, pre woodland furrows from parallel low banks and a network of drainage ditches were seen. {2}{3}
An area of woodland (all of which is classified as plantation) included in the Nature Conservancy Council's 'Inventory of Ancient Woodland'. Ancient woodland status considered to be probable. {4}
