Full Description

PRN 23230 A slight non-surveyable mound was seen in arable land in 1965. It was still visible in low relief in 1982-83. {1} The mound has the conspicuous remains of a medieval building (HER no.22029) visible on its crest - the supposed site of St Guthlac's cell. His cell was said (in an early biography) to have been in the side of a hillock - possibly a barrow? {1}{2}{3} A geophysical survey was carried out to investigate this site but it produced no evidence for the presence of this barrow. {4} A trial excavation was carried out in 2004. This failed to locate any features definitely related to the barrow, although layers of sand, gravel and silt deposits in trench 1 may be associated with the barrow mound if there is a barrow present here. Bronze Age pottery was also found in the secondary fill of a linear feature in trench 2, and a single sherd was found during fieldwalking. Two flint end scrapers were also recovered during the excavations and more flint was found during fieldwalking. {5}
