Description

Geophysical survey consisting of magnetometry and earth resistance survey was undertaken on 3ha of agricultural land to investigate the area immediately surrounding the known medieval building to determine the presence of additional, possibly Roman, activity. It was also hoped that the survey might identify remains of underlying structures e.g. a Roman building or a round barrow beneath the medieval buildings. No evidence for the location of either a preceeding barrow or Roman building was revealed, although the earth resistance survey confirmed the location of the medieval building and also revealed a possible second adjacent building. A circular round barrow ditch to the west, seen on aerial photography, was also confirmed by the earth resistance survey. The magnetometry survey revealed a concentration of magnetic responses which could relate to metalworking on the site, although they may also represent modern ferrous debris. {1}
