Summary
The remains of two ironworking furnaces and forty-one waste pits on land at Stamford West. A large quantity of ironworking waste was recovered from the pits.

Full Description
The remains of a probable ironworking furnace and a large circular waste pit were encountered at this location during trial trenching in February-March 2012. Radiocarbon dating of a roundwood fragment recovered from the interior of the furnace suggested a (pre-400 BC) Early Iron Age date. {1}{2}
A detailed gradiometer survey in May 2014 encountered a small area of increased magnetic response, indicating likely ferrous remains at this location. {3}{4}
Two ironworking furnaces (including the one previously identified) and forty-one waste pits were encountered during an archaeological excavation on land at Stamford West in July-October 2014. A large quantity of ironworking waste including slag and roasted iron ore was recovered from the pits, which may originally have been dug for clay extraction. {5}{6}
