Title Archaeological Evaluation: Stamford West Field, Stamford
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2011

Abstract/Summary

Archive for a programme of archaeological evaluation comprising fifteen trial trenches excavated on land at Stamford West to inform a proposed development. Trenches were placed to target cropmarks and geophysical anomalies identified in a prior phase of magnetometry survey (see ELI14386), while also providing coverage of the rest of the site. The remains of an ironworking furnace of Early-Mid Ion Age date were encountered towards the north of the site, and the presence of the rectilinear cropmark enclosure in the centre of the site was confirmed. Pottery recovered from the fills of the boundary ditch suggested a probable Mid-Late Iron Age date for this feature. Also encountered were a number of Iron Age and undated ditches. From the backfill of one ditch an Early-Mid Bronze Age or Saxon copper alloy bar ingot, a lead shot, and a 13th-14th century potsherd were recovered.
