Full Description

An enclosure was identified in this location by a magnetometry survey in 2019. The enclosure is rectilinear and north-south aligned, with a possible ditch feature running north from its northeast corner. A series of smaller possible enclosures are appended to its southern end. A possible trackway (see MLI127108) was identified about 50m to the west, though it is unknown if the features are contemporary. {1} The presence of the enclosures and probable boundary ditch was confirmed by a programme of trial trenching in 2020. Pits, postholes, gullies, and a spread of material were encountered within the sub-enclosure to the south, highlighting this as an area of intense settlement activity. Moderate quantities of Iron Age and 1st century AD pottery was recovered from the fills of several ditches within the enclosure complex. A boundary ditch to the east was encountered, containing a series of dumped deposits including cess, waterlogged plant macrofossils, and wood remains. {2}{3}
