Description

A magnetometry survey was conducted on land to the east of Sleaford Road, Metheringham, to inform the proposed construction of a new residential development. Two possible rectilinear enclosures were identified. The larger enclosure to the west was north-south aligned, and had a series of smaller possible enclosures emerging from its southern end. A pair of parallel linear anomalies at the western edge of the survey area were interpreted as a potential trackway or palaeochannel. Other weak magnetic readings identified across the survey area may represent isolated ditch and pit features. {1} Subsequent archaeological evaluation (see ELI14088) conducted on the eastern half of the survey area confirmed the presence of the enclosure and positively dated it to the Iron Age. An isolated linear anomaly to the northeast of the site was interpreted as a plough furrow. Subsequent archaeological evaluation (see ELI14101) conducted on the western half of the survey area confirmed the presence of the large enclosure and the sub-enclosures to the south, with pottery recovered dating it to the Iron Age. The possible trackway to the west was also encountered, though no datable finds were recovered.
