Full Description

A roughly square-shaped, grassed lawn at Mareham le Fen. The lawn was puchased by the village as a memorial to those of Mareham le Fen who fought in the First World War, along with the adjacent village hall (see MLI126480). The exact date of construction is a little uncertain, but the lawn is thought to have been dedicated in 1920. A more permanent war memorial was unveiled at the cemetery to the north of the village in 1922 (see MLI125273). {1}{2} The lawn is a small, grassed playing area, historically used for bowls, tennis and croquet. An application to designate it as a Registered Park and Garden was rejected in May 2023. Whilst of local interest showing how the village marked the significance of the First World War, it was felt that the lawn was not of sufficient national importance to meet the criteria for designation, being an open functional space without designed elements. {3}{4}
