Full Description
PRN 33472
A COMPLEX OF MOSTLY REGULAR SUB-RECTANGULAR DITCHED ENCLOSURES AND FIELD BOUNDARIES, WITH 3 POSSIBLE TRACKWAYS, SEEN AS CROPMARKS ON G FOARD Aps OF 1986. APPARENTLY ALSO VISIBLE ON 1958 ST JOSEPH AP. {1}{2}{3}
A GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY OF THE AREA REVEALED ENCLOSURES AND POSSIBLE FIELD SYSTEM, WHICH BY THEIR MORPHOLOGY, HAVE BEEN DATED TO THE ROMAN PERIOD. SEVERAL OF THE FEATURES IDENTIFIED BY THE GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY WERE NOT VISIBLE ON THE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS. {4}
During fieldwalking a scatter of Roman pottery dating mainly to the 2nd and 3rd centuries was recovered from across the entire site, with a cluster over these cropmarks. {4}{5}
During trial trenching in 2002, a Roman ditch, thought to be a boundary ditch, was recorded on a north-west/south-east alignment in Trench 16. A partially destroyed inhumation was recorded parallel to this feature. A Roman iron knife blade and a fragment of green glass were recovered from beneath the left elbow. It is thought likely that more Roman burials may be associated with the boundary ditch.{10}
