Description
A fluxgate gradiometer survey was conducted to inform the proposed construction of a new holiday caravan park on land to the north of Burgh Road, Skegness. A system of probable rectangular enclosures was recorded in the northern half of the survey area, along with traces of medieval ridge and furrow in the southern half. A concentration of magnetic anomalies, thought to have possible human origin, were also recorded in the south-western corner of the site. {1}
Subsequent trial trenching in this area confirmed the presence of medieval ridge and furrow in the southern part of the site, and identified two ditches of unknown date and a spread of post-medieval dumped material in the south-western corner. The suspected system of rectangular enclosures in the northern half of the site was, however, resolved as a series of modern land drains and disturbance (see ELI12857).
