Abstract/Summary

Report on a fluxgate gradiometer survey, conducted to inform the proposed construction of a new holiday caravan park on land to the north of Burgh Road, Skegness. A system of probable rectangular enclosures was recorded in the northern half of the survey area, along with traces of medieval ridge and furrow in the southern half. A concentration of magnetic anomalies, thought to have possible human origin, were also recorded in the south-western corner of the site. Subsequent trial trenching in this area confirmed the presence of medieval ridge and furrow in the southern part of the site, and identified two ditches of unknown date and a spread of post-medieval dumped material in the south-western corner. The suspected system of rectangular enclosures in the northern half of the site was, however, resolved as a series of modern land drains and disturbance (see ELI12857).
