Abstract/Summary

Report on a programme of archaeological evaluation comprising five trial trenches excavated on land between Main Street and Station Road, Torksey, to inform a proposed residential development. Two distinct phases of archaeological activity were encountered, separated by a deposit of wind-blown sands. The earliest activity recorded on the site dated to the Late Saxon period, comprising pits, ditches, gullies and post holes. Finds recovered included Torksey ware pottery and environmental remains indicative of domestic activity. The later phase of activity comprised a similar range of features of Late Medieval date. Of note was a demolition layer containing roof tile and stone rubble, including worked stone fragments, which may have been the remains of a building from the 'Abbey Yard' to the south. The earthwork remains of an east-west aligned hollow-way were also recorded.
