Full Description

Two parallel undated ditches on a southwest-northeast alignment, visible as cropmarks on satellite imagery. The eastern ditch is short, measuring possibly 50m in length. {1} Linear anomalies consistent with the cropmark ditches were encountered during a programme of geophysical survey at this location in November 2011. {2} Both ditches were encounterd during subsequent trial trenching in February-March 2012. Three sherds of Roman pottery were recovered from the western ditch, suggesting a 2nd to 3rd century AD date. Radiocarbon dating of a fragment of charcoal recovered from the eastern ditch returned a date of 341-328 (1.3%) and 204-40 (94.1%) BC, so it is not certain that the ditches are contemporary. {3}{4}
