Abstract/Summary

Archive for an archaeological excavation conducted on land to the south of Burton Cliff Cottages, Middle Street, Burton by Lincoln, to preserve by record known Roman remains on the site, prior to the construction of four new dwellings. Four phases of Roman activity have been identified across the site, including a mid 1st to 2nd century ditched enclosure and cremation burial, from which a glass cremation vessel was recovered, and a large 2nd-3rd century cobbled surface likely forming a yard or yards in the northern end of the site. There is also limited evidence for a possible very early post-Roman phase of occupation on the site. The possible limestone foundation and construction cut identified in the preceeding programme of trial trenching (see ELI14329) was discovered to be the backfill of a ditch, with high concentrations of limestone along its length interpreted as redeposited bank material.
