Full Description

Roman features were encountered on land to the east of Middle Street, Burton by Lincoln, during trial trenching in August-September 2019. A pit containing domestic waste including Late Iron Age and Roman pot and a small assemblage of butchered bone, boundary ditches, and a possible limestone foundation within a construction cut were identified. Recovered finds included a deposit of stone and painted wall plaster, and 1st-2nd century AD pottery including a sherd of pot that had been converted into a tool. These features may relate to the possible Roman villa or settlement site to the immediate southeast (MLI50557), though most of the finds recovered from the area suggest a later (3rd-4th century AD) date. {1}{2} Subsequent strip, map and sample excavation on the same site took place in August-September 2021. Four phases of Roman activity and a possible very early phase of post-Roman activity (see MLI127314) were identified. The earliest phase (mid 1st to 2nd century AD) was represented by a cremation burial (MLI127314) within a ditched enclosure. Several large pits dating to the 2nd century AD were encountered, one of which truncated the northern arm of the ditched enclosure. A large cobbled area, truncated by modern ploughing, was encountered at the northern end of the site and likely dated to the late 2nd century AD or later. This was interpreted as one or more working yards. By the 4th century this surface appears to have been abandoned, with the final phase of Roman activity on the site represented by a layer of silt containing domestic waste. The possible limestone foundation identified in the trial trenching was revealed to be the backfill of the Phase 1 boundary ditch, with high concentrations of limestone along its length interpreted as redeposited bank material. {3}{4}
