Abstract/Summary

Report on a programme of archaeological evaluation comprising seven trial trenches excavated on land at Milestone Lane, Pinchbeck, to inform a proposed residential development. A former pond of likely 16th-17th century date and several natural channels and ditches were encountered. The ditches were cut into laminated natural silts, suggesting a history of flooding on the site. Large quantities of early Medieval pottery were recovered from an east-west aligned gully. 11th-12th century pottery and environmental remains including charred grains were recovered from a nearby north-south aligned gully, interpreted as the rear boundary of a Medieval property on Crossgate Lane, 12m to the east. Two nearby pits containing domestic refuse typical of the period supported this interpretation. Also encountered was a pit containing fired clay interpreted as possible briquetage, although environmental sampling of the site found no evidence of a brackish or marine environment.
