Full Description

Medieval features on land to the west of Crossgate Lane, Pinchbeck. Large quantities of Medieval pottery were recovered from an east-west aligned gully running perpendicular to the road. 11th-12th century pottery and environmental remains were recovered from a nearby north-south aligned gully, interpreted as the rear boundary of a Medieval property on Crossgate Lane, 12m to the east. Two nearby pits containing domestic refuse typical of the period, including charred oat, wheat, barley, and rye grains, supported this interpretation. Also encountered was a pit containing fired clay interpreted as possible briquetage, although environmental sampling of the site found no evidence of a brackish or marine environment. {1}{2}
