Abstract/Summary

Report on a programme of trial trenching comprising twenty one trenches excavated to inform the proposed construction of a new residential estate on land off Lincoln Road, Ruskington. East-west aligned furrows relating to medieval and post-medieval agricultural practices were identified across the entire site. The presence of two linears at the southern end of the site that were previously identified in a magnetometry survey was confirmed. Other linears, pits, and postholes were identified nearby. These could not be positively dated, though a tentative date of Roman and Middle Saxon activity was suggested. In the southeast corner of the site, fired clay and smelting slag were recovered, suggesting possibly regionally significant Saxon smelting in close proximity to the site.
