Full Description
A programme of trial trenching was undertaken on land off Lincoln Road, Ruskington, in 2022. A series of Middle Saxon features were identified across the site, with concentrations towards the west and southeast. Some of these features appeared to have been recorded as discrete magnetic anomalies in a preceeding magnetometry survey of the site. These features included pits, post holes, and linear ditch features. Pottery recovered from these features comprised 32 sherds of South Lincolnshire Maxey-type ware, 1 sherd of Early-Mid Saxon ware, 1 sherd of Charnwood ware, 2 sherds of Early-Mid Saxon Sandstone Tempered ware, and 1 sherd of miscellaneous Grey ware. An assemblage of animal bone and tooth remains was also recovered, primarily consisting of cattle bone, with some sheep/goat, and a number of unidentified small fragments, as well as one worked fallow deer antler tine. The prevalence of cattle over sheep/goat is typical of Saxon dietary patterns. A 350g lump of ironworking slag recovered from a ditch in the southeast corner of site suggests the presence of Early-Middle Saxon iron smelting in close proximity to the site. {1}{2}{3}{4}
