Abstract/Summary

Report for historic building recording and archaeological monitoring at Sandy Nook, Well Street, Bishop Norton. The surveyed buildings comprised an L-shaped range of former farm buildings, consisting of a roughly north-south aligned two storey barn and east-west aligned single storey outbuildings. Both buildings were constructed of coursed limestone with red brick quoins and areas of red brick repairs, under pitched gabled pantile roofs. The two storey barn appears to have undergone several phases of alteration and repair, and it is possible that the roof height at the southern end of the range was raised at some point. During the archaeological monitoring, three pits were identified; these were attributed to small scale domestic activity in the area. One pit produced several sherds of shell-tempered medieval pottery.
