Report on programme of trial trenching undertaken on land at Walnut Tree Field, Wellingore, prior to the proposed construction of 13 dwellings and associated access/infrastructure. Five trenches were excavated, measuring 20m x 2m. Residual early Bronze Age beaker fragments and worked flint were recovered from later features. These finds may suggest settlement features or nearby funerary context. A series of Iron Age features were identified in two of the trenches. These comprised a series of seventeen postholes, a gully, a ditch and a grain storage pit. The ditch was a substantial, north-south aligned V-shaped ditch which also contained some residual Bronze Age sherds and a late Neolithic/early Bronze Age arrowhead, A soil sample from its fill identified oat, barley and bread wheat. The grain storage pit was large and steep-sided, containing three fill contexts. A soil sample identified limited evidence of metalworking, as well as oyster shell and some grains of wheat, barley and oat. A series of Romano-British features were also identified in the trenches. These comprised a narrow linear feature which contained a possibly residual sherd of Romano-British pottery, a palisade trench which may have supported a timber fence line, and a linear gully, whose terminal may have been in another trench. This gully terminal contained five sherds of Romano-British pottery. Two parallel, east-west aligned linear gullies were located in Trench 3 – one contained six sherds of late Roman pottery, while the other contained eleven sherds of late Saxon pottery with residual Romano-British sherds. A series of Saxon features were also identified. These comprised a substantial linear feature which contained nineteen sherds of late Saxon pottery, as well as two residual sherds of late Iron Age pottery, a posthole alignment, a north-south aligned ditch, three pits, and a sunken feature building. The sunken feature building contained a well-stratified group of 5th-8th century pottery. A soil sample identified evidence of small scale metalworking and a fragment of thumb crucible. It also identified fish bone, mussel shell fragments and a high proportion of charred remains. No further archaeological features were identified.
