Full Description

A programme of trial trenching was undertaken on land at Walnut Tree Field, Wellingore, in 2011. A series of Late Saxon features were identified. The first of these was a large linear feature, approximately 2m wide, and 0.38m wide. Its profile contained indications of re-cutting, and the upper fills contained nineteen sherds of late 9th-early 10th century pottery, as well as two sherds of late Iron Age pottery. To the immediate south of this ditch was an alignment of four postholes, which did not respect the alignment of the ditch, though the pottery found within the postholes suggests a similar date. Trench 3 contained two parallel east-west aligned gullies of roughly 0.8m width. One gully contained eleven sherds of late Saxon pottery and nine residual Romano-British sherds, while the other contained six sherds of later Romano-British pottery, which may have been residual. This trench also contained a north-south aligned shallow ditch containing four mid-9th-mid-11th century sherds, as well as three post pits. Only two were excavated, of which one contained four mid-9th-10th century pottery. Trench 4 contained a sunken feature building, comprising a large central pit measuring 4m north-west/south-east, and surviving to a depth of circa 0.8m, where it had been cut through the bedrock. A well stratified group of pottery from a consistent 5th-8th century date range were recovered from the pit, with some residual Romano-British sherds. A soil sample showed evidence for small scale metalworking in the form of hammerscale, and a fragment of thumb crucible. The soil sample also contained fish bone, mussel shell fragments, a high proportion of charred remains, including hazel fragments, and grains of wheat and barley. {1}{2}
