Full Description

A programme of trial trenching was undertaken on land at Walnut Tree Field, Wellingore in 2011. A range of Iron Age features were identified in two of the trenches. The first of these in Trench 2 was a substantial V-shaped ditch, measuring 2m wide and surviving to a depth of 2.5m. It had been cut into the bedrock. It contained thirty-two sherds of Iron Age pottery, as well as residual fragments of early Bronze Age pot and flint artefacts. A soil sample of the ditch identified grains of oat, barley and bread wheat. Seventeen post holes of roughly Iron Age date were identified in the same trench, however they may have been of Romano-British date. It is likely the post holes were on two east-west alignments. The post holes were typically large, measuring between 40-60cm in diameter. A gully was identified in Trench 3, which contained thirteen sherds of probable Late Iron Age pottery. In the same trench was a very steep sided pit containing preserved traces of a purposeful clay lining and stratified late Iron Age pottery within three fill contexts. This is likely to represent a grain storage pit. A soil sample identified evidence of metalworking, as well as oyster shell and grains of wheat. The uppermost fill of the pit contained Romano-British sherds and was likely to be a post-Iron Age levelling or colluvial deposit. {1}{2}
