Report for a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording conducted during groundworks for the construction of a new residential dwelling, a detached garage, and associated access land, at The Walled Garden, South-East of Riby Church, Church Hill, Riby, in May and June 2021. The monitoring did not identify any archaeological activity or finds in the area of the detached garage. The monitoring of the groundworks for the residential dwelling identified an undated pit feature, as well as a pit containing a single sherd of Roman pottery. The monitoring of the groundworks for the associated access land identified a north-east/south-west orientated ditch with a shallow and truncated profile, which may have functioned as a boundary, for drainage or both. It contained six sherds of 10th century or late Anglo-Saxon pottery, along with three daub fragments and nine pieces of fired clay originated from contemporary wattle and daubed timber buildings, providing evidence of the late Anglo-Saxon settlement of Riby. This late Anglo-Saxon ditch was truncated by four pits. The first of these was shallow and truncated and did not contain any finds. The second pit truncated the first pit and contained sherds of medieval pottery from the 13th-14th centuries, a residual sherd of 10th century pottery, as well as 10 daub fragments and 9 pieces of fired clay. The third pit was to the north and contained 13th to mid-14th century pottery and another residual sherd of 9th-10th century pottery, as well as one daub fragment and one piece of fired clay. The fourth pit contained one sherd of 13th-14th century pottery, a residual sherd of 9th-10th century pottery, as well as two daub fragments and six pieces of burnt flint. No further archaeological features or finds were identified.
