During a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at The Walled Garden, South-East of Riby Church, Riby, four medieval pits were identified in the area of groundworks associated with the access land for the new residential dwelling. All these pits cut the earlier Anglo Saxon ditch (MLI) and dated to the 13th-14th centuries. The first was a slightly rounded pit with a shallow and truncated profile, with no finds. The second pit truncated this pit and had a very shallow and truncated profile. It contained a single fill containing one residual sherd of 10th century pottery, as well as a sherd of 13th-14th century pottery, 10 daub fragments, and 9 pieces of fired clay. To the north of these pits were two further pits. The first of these was very shallow and heavily truncated, containing a fill with a residual sherd of 9th-10th century pottery, and a single sherd of 13th-mid-14th century pottery, one daub fragment, and one piece of fired clay. To the immediate east of and truncating this pit was the fourth pit, which was deeper and more substantial, with a truncated profile. It contained a residual sherd of late 9th-10th century pottery, as well as one sherd of 13th-14th century pottery and two daub fragments. Most of the daub and fired clay were possibly from the same structure of group of structures utilising the same or similar clay, with deep wattle impressions, possible float marks and finger smoothing. These pits provided evidence of the contemporary medieval settlement of Riby, situated close to the medieval parish church and churchyard. {1}{2}
