Full Description

During a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at The Walled Garden, South-East of Riby Church, Riby, a large ditch was identified in the area of groundworks associated with the access land for the new residential dwelling. The ditch was north-east/south-west orientated and extended beyond the limits of the ground reduction area. It had a shallow and truncated profile with two fills. The lower fill contained six sherds of 10th century pottery, three daub fragments and 12 pieces of fired clay. The upper fill did not contain any finds and was sealed by the topsoil horizon. Most of the daub and fired clay were possibly from the same structure of group of structures utilising the same or similar clay, with deep wattle impressions, possible float marks and finger smoothing. The fired clay originated from the fabric of contemporary wattle and daubed timber buildings and provide evidence for the late Anglo-Saxon settlement of Riby. The ditch may have functioned as a boundary, for drainage, or as both. {1}{2}
