Full Description
A series of magnetic anomalies were recorded in September 2013, during a magnetometry survey, conducted to inform the proposed construction of new fishing lakes on land at Mill Road, Addlethorpe. The anomalies were interpreted as a number of probable saltern sites of possible Iron Age or Romano-British date. Augering was conducted at the site of two of the magnetic anomalies, with briquetage being recovered from both sites between the depths of 1m to 1.5m. {1}{2}
A subsequent evaluation of this site was conducted in November 2013, when six trial trenches were excavated. The trenches were located only in those areas that would be affected by the construction of the new fishing lakes, and did not directly investigate the probable saltern sites previously identified. Evidence of ancient salt making activity in this area was confirmed, however, with the identification of a number of fragmentary pieces of redeposited briquetage, all recovered from a layer of alluvium that directly overlay an ancient ground level that was found across the site. A number of former saltmarsh channels, contemporary with the ancient land surface, were also identified. These channels would have brought brine to the site during high tides, and would very likely have been utilised by the salt makers. {3}{4}
