Full Description

A well developed trackway seems to begin at Horncastle and run right up the western edge of the Wolds to the Humber at South Ferriby. Its southern end is doubtful. {1} The Roman route from Horncastle to South Ferriby on the Humber is an old trackway known as High Street that runs the length of the Wolds. It is generally a ridgeway that in the central part of its course is followed by parish boundaries for a long distance continuously. {2} A Prehistoric track on the western edge of the Wolds that continued in use during the Roman period. {3} South Ferriby is at the northern end of a the probably Prehistoric route known today as High Street which ran along the western edge of the chalk scarp. {4} Excavations on the site of the Roman settlement at Nettleton Top (PRN 50481) found stone buildings that faced the line of a Roman road beneath the High Street (B1225) and Roman property boundaries also align with this road. Thus the modern B1225 overlies a Roman road here that was in existence in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, if not before. {5}
