Full Description
Settlement activity of probable Late Iron Age or Romano-British date was recorded on land either side of Caistor High Street, South Willingham, during geophysical survey in 2008. At least two discrete settlement complexes were recorded, one to the north of Donington Road and the other bisected by it, both to the east of Caistor High Street. The northern enclosure complex comprised a large rectangular enclosure within which was a dense array of sub-enclosures and several possible buildings, as well as pit-like features or burnt areas. The form of this complex is distinctly late Iron Age or Romano-British. A probable post-Medieval quarry pit has truncated part of the eastern edge of the settlement. A large boundary ditch on the same alignment as the complex's eastern enclosure ditch was recorded to the northeast. Less of the southern complex was recorded in the survey, though it appears to enclose a larger area and is of similar density to the northern complex. Boundary ditches of likely agricultural origin are evident close to both complexes. Further sub-rectangular and curvilinear enclousres were also partially captured by the survey to the west and south of the northern complex, and at least one ring ditch was identified to the west of Caistor High Street. {1}
Much Roman pottery was reported in 1967 as being found in the field to the east of Caistor High Street and north of Donnington Road, South Willlingham. {2}
No further pottery was found in this area during further field investigation conducted in 1976. The area lies on level ground, on the summit of a prominent ridge under plough at the time of the visit. {3}
A programme of fieldwalking undertaken in 2007 in association with the above geophysical survey recovered a small assemblage of Roman greyware pottery and tile from the topsoil of the field to the east of Caistor High Street and south of Donnington Road. {4}
