Full Description

An area of likely medieval ridge and furrow was identified during analysis of aerial photographs in 2010. It was visible as a series of parallel linear cropmarks, running in an east to west direction, to the south of Newton on Trent. {1} Eleven sherds of medieval pottery were recovered during a systematic fieldwalking survey, conducted in 2011, to inform the proposed construction of a new water treatment works, to the south-west of Newton on Trent. The sherds were found over a wide area, though with a slight bias to the land around the A1133. The sherds were thought to be of 12th to 14th century date, though were heavily abraded and likely represent manuring scatters associated with the ridge and furrow. Traces of the ridge and furrow were recorded during a magnetometry survey, conducted in March 2011, alongside the fieldwalking. The features were recorded as a number of linear magnetic anomalies, along an east to west alignment. Subsquent trial trenching conducted in 2011, after the initial survey work, revealed small traces of the ridge and furrow. The remains of several linear furrows were recorded in a few of the trenches, on both sides of the A1133, but no finds were recovered from any of the fills. {2}{3}
