Full Description
5-7 Lee Street was assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as the numerous alterations to the building throughout the 20th century have had an acumulatively detrimental impact on its architectural integrity.
5-7 Lee Street is a pair of houses dating to the late 1820's or early 1830's. It is built of red brick laid in English garden wall bond, with a roof covering of modern tiles. It is rectangular in plan, two-storey, and has a symmetrical frontage with a pitched roof and gable stacks with three circular pots. It has a central, wide, depressed three-centred arch providing access to the rear of the building. Each house has two bays with a deeply recessed front door in the inner bay which has a classical doorcase with a moulded cornice, a frieze with elongated triglyphs, and panelled soffit and jambs. At the rear of no.7 is the remnant of extensive stabling which is thought to date to the late 18th century. The pair of houses has been subject to some alterations, namely the replacement of the front doors, the removal of almost all the fireplaces, and the replacement of the roof covering with modern tiles. One of the outbuildings of no. 5 has been converted into a kitchen, and a small extension has been added to the rear of no. 7 to provide a kitchen. {1}{2}
