Full Description

PRN 48228 Medieval remains were located by a watching brief carried out during building works at Monks Elder cottage, Kirkstead. A concentration of roof tile dated 14th to 16th century was found during excavations for the garage (see PRN 46717, also ELI 7172 ). A later phase of work (ELI 9291) involving the excavation of soakaways to the north of the garage revealed a fragment of masonry (undated) comprising two courses of burnt limestone and a piece of dressed and moulded limestone - probably a 12th century respond for an arch or large door jamb (possibly from Kirkstead Abbey). Furthermore, a possible robber trench was noted in the area west of the garage, during excavations for a sewage pipe. The pottery assemblage from the site (mostly unstratified) included sherds from eleven vessels dated as medieval. The material comprised one sherd from a Potterhanworth jar or bowl (dated 13th to 15th century) and sherds from ten Toynton Medieval Ware vessels (mostly jugs), in a fabric not previously identified in vessels from Toynton, but known from sites in Ingoldmells. Toynton Medieval Ware vessels range in date between 13th century and mid 16th century. {1}{2}{3}
