Full Description
PRN 46718
Post medieval material collected from topsoil and other deposits. A wide range of post medieval artefacts were recovered. The majority of the pottery sherds were probably produced at Kirkstead in the mid 16th to early 17th century. The vessels were mainly bowls and jars but with the possibility of a few jug sherds. Several vessels are misfired, suggesting the bulk of the pottery represents kiln waste (see PRN 46718). The presence of misfired vessels suggests that a kiln may have been located in the immediate vicinity. There is documentary evidence of post-dissolution potters using the Abbey site; one of these being Francis Moodie (died 1610).{1}
Further evidence of local products and kiln waste was recovered during a watching brief on further groundworks. {2}{3}
