Full Description

PRN 46717 Post medieval material was collected from topsoil and other deposits during a watching brief on the excavation of footings for a new garage to the north of the cottage. A wide range of post medieval artefacts were recovered, including pottery sherds dating to the mid 16th to early 17th century. The vessels were mainly bowls and jars but with the possibility of a few jug sherds. Several vessels are misfired, suggesting the bulk of the pottery represents kiln waste (see PRN 46718). A large number of roof tiles were also collected which may be from buildings nearby or from the Abbey buildings to the southwest.{1} Further groundworks, relating to an extension to the cottage and the installation of services, were carried out between December 2006 and November 2008. This work resulted in the recovery of more post-medieval artefacts - mostly pottery and some tile. Both assemblages are considered in reports by Jane Young, incorporating previous finds from MEK05 (unstratified from the garage foundations). Post-medieval types formed the majority of the total assemblage, with dates ranging between late 15th and 18th centuries. There were five vessels (all bowls, one misfired) of Toynton/Bolingbroke type (mid 15th to mid/late 16th century), but most of the post-medieval vessels appear to be products of a local kiln or kilns. These differ from known Kirkstead products and might derive from a different workshop or phase. Bowls predominated but jars and jugs were also identified, along with pipkins, a possible mug, a lid and a candlestick - the latter of a type not previously noted. A high proportion of the vessels were possible waste products. A small number of vessels from other sources included two from elsewhere in Lincolnshire, one from Staffordshire and a German Stoneware drinking jug. There were no identifiable features associated with the post medieval finds. {2}{3}
