Full Description
PRN 48225
A small group of features, possibly representative of early Anglo-Saxon settlement, was located through monitoring of groundworks relating to the installation of a waterpipe west of Lodge Farm near Skendleby. The features included a shallow pit, interpreted as a probable grubenhaus, which extended over an area of 3.6m by 2.4m. The fill of the feature contained a significant quantity of 5th to 7th century pottery, together with residual late Bronze Age pottery (PRN 48226) a Roman sherd (PRN 48227) which may have been reworked during the Anglo-Saxon period, a glass bead, a stone spindle whorl and a sizeable assemblage of animal bone. An underlying gully could have been integral to the probable grubenhaus, or predated it. A pit located in close proximity to the probable grubenhaus produced an abraded potsherd of early Anglo-Saxon date, together with a mixed assemblage of animal bone. An undated pit, interpreted as a possible posthole, was located at a point 50m north-east of the main concentration of features. {1}{2}
