Full Description

House thought to be of early 19th century date. Built of orange brick with a hipped slate roof having one ridge and a single wall stack. Of two storeys with a 3 bay front, with central 4 flush panelled door and plain overlight, flanked by single glazing bar sashes. To the 1st floor are 2 similar windows. All openings have flat rubbed brick arches. For the full description and the legal address of this formerly listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} An investigation to establish the date of construction of 41 Front Street was conducted by English Heritage in July 2012. The appearance of the main eastern elevation had initially suggested that the structure was of early 19th century origin, but more detailed investigation concluded that the building was of probable late 19th century date. The interior plan form, with its small entrance lobby with doors to either side and central steep staircase, is more reminiscent of simple houses of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Externally, the patchy brickwork, particularly above the ground floor, suggests the use of recycled materials from a variety of sources, or perhaps indicating the extensive modification of an existing structure on the site. The building seemed to have been constructed in some haste, without attention to structural niceties such as attaching the building to its neighbour to the rear. No significant original internal features which might provide further dating evidence, such as fireplace surrounds, seemed to survive. The house had remained unoccupied for a number of years prior to the investigation, and was in a poor condition internally. It was decided that the building no longer met the criteria for listing, and it was therefore subsequently de-listed. {3}{4} 41 Front Street was the subject of a brief programme of research and photographic recording, conducted in January 2013 prior to its proposed demolition. The house was rectangular in plan, of two storeys and three bays, with a central door with plain overlight. The brickwork throughout was variegated, with the lower half of the western elevation seeming to have originally been either a garden wall or part of an earlier structure. The house had two rooms to ground and first floor, separated by a staircase rising directly from the front door. Additionally, the ground floor kitchen contained a scullery and pantry to either side of the kitchen, while one of the first floor rooms had a small room to one side and a cupboard over the stairs; the small room being lit by the horizontal sash window. The ground floor had two fireplaces, one large enough to accommodate a range, with a further small fireplace to the first floor, although none of the hearths or fireplace surrounds were extant. The doors were all plain, being four-panelled wood with Bakelite handles. The brickwork of the rear wall was exposed in the south, first-floor room, and showed a straight joint angled into the pitch of an earlier roofline, to the south of which are two phases of brickwork. The building was demolished soon afterwards, with the site being cleared by mid 2013. {5}
