Full Description

Road bridge and sluice gates with parallel footbridge. Construction started in 1859, with the structure being built for the North Level Commissioners by Robert Stephenson. Built of black coloured red brick, ashlar, wood and iron. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} The sluice gates were the subject of a heritage statement, produced in September 2020, to assess the impact of proposed repair works. The structure is known by the name Foul Anchor Sluice, and is comprised of a larger, central arch, with smaller arches to each side. Each arch has a set of timber doors designed to allow water to flow out into the tidal River Nene. The public highway of Front Road is carried over the sluice, with the parallel footbridge lying on the north-eastern side of the main structure. A previous phase of repair works was conducted in 2015, when the doors of the central arch were replaced with new timber. {2}
