Full Description

Grade II listed shop with offices and flat above, dating from 1896 to 1897, altered in the mid 20th century and restored in original form in 1992. It is by William Watkins of Lincoln for Peacock and Willson's Bank. It is brick with a terracotta front made by Doulton of Lambeth, and has a slate roof with two side wall stacks with cornices. It is in Gothic/Renaissance Revival style. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} Four trial trenches were excavated by CLAU in February 1992, to the rear of 191 High Street, prior to its redevelopment, and as recommended by an earlier desk based assessment. Whilst the results were largely negative, they indicated that stratified archaeological deposits were probably present on the site, although the construction of the original cellars of 191 High Street had destroyed these remains to at least a depth of 1.5m over large parts of the site. {2}{3}{4} A watching brief was conducted by CLAU in May 1992, during the excavation of the foundation trenches for the redevelopment of the 191 High Street site. The extensively truncated remains of the original cellared structures to the rear of 191 High Street were revealed, along with the remains of a very likely contemporary well. Evidence of earlier medieval and post-medieval occupation of the site was also recorded. {5}{6}
